There are only few modern cities in the world which are as old as Yerevan. In 2018 the city will celebrate its 2,800 th anniversary. This ancient city was founded in 782 BC by the tsar of Ancient Urartu – Argishti I who built the fortress on Arin-Berd hill and named it Erebuni. That fortress gave the name to the city which grew around. The ancient slab found by archeologists on that hill became the original birth certificate of the city.
Sevan city is located on the north-western side of the lake with the same name, at height of 1,900m above sea level. Its population is over 23,000 people. Sevan is a resort city and also an administrative center of Sevan district of Gegharkunik region in Armenia. The city’s history begins from 1842, when Russian settlers-molokanes (a special group of the orthodox Russians) set up a small colony at the riverhead of the Razdan (flows from the Sevan lake).
Located several miles from Garni, along the river Azat gorge to the northeast, on the amphitheatre-like slope of steep rocks, amidst severe and majestic nature is Geghard or Geghardavank monastery well-known for its rocky sights. The direction there is shown by the figure of a lioness on a high pedestal standing right at the abrupt turn after which you suddenly see the monastery.
